100 Best Paleo Diet Recipes We Love | Meraki Lane (14)

Full disclosure: I had no idea what the paleo diet was until I started writing this post. I assumed it was another vegan-ish diet, with no meat allowed and crazy limitations, but it’s actually a diet I could get behind. Not only does it sound extremely healthy, but the 100 paleo recipes I rounded up look beyond delicious. My fall calendar is now filled with paleo recipes I can’t wait to cook up!

What is the Paleo Diet?

If you’re new to the paleo diet like me, it’s also known as the “caveman diet.” It’s a diet based on the foods supposedly eaten by our hunter-gatherer ancestors including fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood and nuts.

The idea behind it is that the food that modern (wo)man is eating today is leading to health issues and chronic diseases not faced by our ancestors, and if we eliminate these foods, we’re more likely to live healthier, longer lives. We need to go back to eating real, whole unprocessed foods that benefit rather than harm our bodies. In a nutshell: scrap the wheat, sugar, laboratory concocted foods, and chemically processed vegetable and seed oils.

What’s Off-Limits On The Paleo Diet?

A big part of eating paleo means a grain-free diet. That includes all grains, regardless of whether or not they are gluten-free. (Gluten-free diets and the paleo diet are different in that gluten-free diets still allow some grains like rice and quinoa – basically grains that don’t contain gluten.)

There are a lot of different opinions out there on what it means to be paleo, and you can decide how strict you want to be. But a strict paleo diet is totally grain-free. Strict paleo also means no dairy and no beans like black beans, garbanzo beans or kidney beans. I was definitely a little freaked out by the prospect of cutting out all of the delicious cheese, yogurt and hummus dip I love to snack on. But one glance at my long list of paleo diet recipes makes those fears disappear because these ideas look amazing!

It’s also totally possible to follow a “mostly” paleo diet and just focus on cutting out all refined and processed grains, sugars and oils, and eating primarily vegetables, fruits, meat, eggs, seafood and some nuts.

If you want to know more about the paleo diet, I recommend the following books to get started:

There is a lot of science out there around the claims made by people who are very pro-paleo, so you can decide for yourself if you think your health might benefit from making the switch. Some proponents believe a strict paleo diet will help improve autoimmune conditions, and almost everyone touts the weight-loss benefits. (Be warned, however, because there are a plethora of paleo-friendly dessert recipes out there on the internet!)
