    Though flight services resumed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) airport here on Monday after a 21-hour suspension in the wake of severe cyclone Remal, at least eight flights had to be diverted to other cities because of adverse weather conditions. "So far, eight flights bound for Kolkata had to be diverted to other airports such as Guwahati, Gaya, Varanasi and Bhubaneswar due to bad weather," an AAI spokesperson said.

    ECB's Lane says cuts will depend on underlying inflation, demand

    The European Central Bank will cut interest rates at a slower or faster pace depending on the strength of underlying inflation and demand, ECB chief economist Philip Lane said on Monday."The subsequent pace of rate cuts will be slower if there are upward surprises to underlying inflation (especially in relation to the underlying dynamics of domestic inflation and services inflation) and the level of demand (in view of the implications of demand conditions for the medium-term inflation outlook) and will be faster if there are downward surprises," Lane told an audience in Dublin.

    Director General of Meteorology, IMD, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said, "The South West Monsoon rainfall over the country as a whole is likely to be 106% of the long-period average with a model error of 4%. Thus, above-normal rainfall is most likely over the country as a whole."

    A division bench of the Delhi High Court today upheld its single judge’s order asking SpiceJet to return two aircraft and three engines to its lessor TWC Aviation. While dismissing as withdrawn the airline’s appeal, a bench led by Justice Rajiv Shakhder granted the low cost carrier three weeks time till June 17 to return the aircraft and engines along with technical records. The single judge had asked SpiceJet to return the engines by May 28. The HC noted SpiceJet’s senior counsel Amit Sibal’s argument that he wants to advance his submission related to the jurisdiction issue before the single judge, but that will not come in the way of returning the engines. He said he had spoken to the CEO himself who wanted a reasonable time to arrange and replace the engines so that operations are not interrupted

    Three persons were injured and vehicular movement was disrupted as trees lay uprooted in several parts of Kolkata in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal, which made landfall in West Bengal and neighbouring Bangladesh, officials said on Monday. Reports of uprooting of trees have been received from Southern Avenue, Lake Place, Chetla, D L Khan Road, Dufferin Road, Ballygunge Road, New Alipore, Behala, Jadavpur, Golpark, Hatibagan, Jagat Mukherjee Park and College Street, as well as the city's adjoining Salt Lake area, they said. Around 68 trees were uprooted in Kolkata, and another 75 in nearby Salt Lake and Rajarhat area. "Water-logging was reported from various places including Southern Avenue, Lake View Road, Pratapaditya Road, Tollygunge Phari, Alipore and Central Avenue, resulting in traffic diversion," a senior officer of Kolkata Traffic Police said. Three persons have suffered injuries in Manicktala area after the cyclone struck, though the exact cause is yet to be known, an official said.

    The Sealdah division of the Eastern Railway took a slew of measures in view of Cyclone 'Remal' making landfall over coastal areas of West Bengal and Bangladesh. The Sealdah division has set up Emergency control rooms from May 25 to May 27 and installed pumps at all critical places to mitigate water logging. Public announcements were also made frequently at all stations, the Railways said. Moreover, DG sets and emergency lights have been arranged at stationsand sufficient tree-cutting equipment was kept at critical locations. Tower wagons were kept ready with staff to move quickly to attend to Overhead equipment (OHE) problems.
