unearth Feb 15 2011
as a native new yorker i am embarrassed to think that anyone who has never experienced the city would draw even the most rudimentary notion that this atrocious film is in any way representative of the place. after about three "episodes" i turned to my appalled yet fascinated wife and said "this is like a really long 'stella artois' commercial. not surprisingly the next segment had a shot of a wall with the words 'stella artois' emblazened across it.

I haven't seen the film yet, but a quick peek at the cast probably saved 2 hours of my life. I would watch it if James Murphy was in it.

Hey I wrote a bunch of scenes that don't complement one another and fall short of any cohesive storytelling, let's make an artsy coma inducer. The only way I could be less impressed by this experience is if students here at rateyourmusic film school spammed perfect ratings insisting it's just too profound to understand (Synecdoche I'm looking at you, you pile of garbage). I'm glad I don't live in New York if it inspires films like these.

New York I Love You, but this film's bringing me down.
Paris, I Love You, was more than just a film that took place in Paris. It was a film that embraced Paris that showed you softer side, the hidden side, the City from many angles. The stories weren't just about people who lived in the city, the film was about the Parisian experience. New York, I Love You, hoping to capture that same essence falls way short and flat on its face. In the film's attempt to teach the audience about New York the film settles for merely seconds of scenic shots. The stories themselves look like they could have been filmed anywhere, even a Hollywood studio lot. The film attempts to weave to stories together but this technique is done poorly and only serves to weaken the characters. So instead of longer stories with more time to flesh out the characters, the viewers get more frequent character appearances but less sense of who they are. Natalie Portman was terrible. Her attempts to play a Hasidic Jew were laughable. But then again Portman is such a one dimensional actress it is no surprise. The best story was the one featuring Shia LaBeouf and Julie Christie. It was the only story which didn't feel as rushed as the city. I felt like I had actually had time to soak everything before being whisked away to a different scene. The story was beautifully shot and the score fit the mood perfectly. The story was mysterious but that's ok because it didn't feel pointless like the rest of the stories. To steal a line from James Murphey, New York I Love You, but this film's bringing me down.
