Three Midlands students recently helped fund and assemble a specially equipped mini-car for pediatric patient Cailum Gibson, age 2, who received and had a test ride in his car on Tuesday, June 27 at Children’s Hospital in Columbia, SC.This is the first mini-car presented to a Midlands patient, who happens to be the child of a Prisma Health Richland team member, Kia Gibson. Fundraising and learning about the mini-cars has been a service project of Carson and Kate Turner (ages 10 and 8, children of team member Justin Turner) and Dalton Boswell (12). The kids raised money door-to-door in their Columbia neighborhood and helped create a short social media video to support their effort. They raised enough funds to ultimately equip to two mini-cars.Cailum was born with a rare genetic disorder, Joubert Syndrome, that affects his brain development as well as his mobility. Working with the Go Baby Go program, Prisma Health orthotists and prosthetists customized the ride-on toy car for Cailum to accommodate his mobility challenges so he can ride in it to play and socialize more easily, especially outdoors.Kia, Cailum’s mother, said, “I knew this would be perfect for Cailum as soon as I learned about the program. He loves being outdoors and until now we’ve needed to carry him or push him in a stroller to be outside. I am so grateful to Carson, Dalton and Kate and to my Prisma Health family for making this possible for my son.”Prisma Health’s Go Baby Go program gave away its first customized mini-cars last December in Greenville and was intended to roll out slowly in Columbia and Greenville as funding and volunteers became available. Each car is modified by volunteers and evaluated by a clinical engineering team and then given free of charge to families or recipient organizations. Our leaders welcomed some special guests to Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Upstate to help bring delight and healing to young patients with cancer and sickle cell disease. Aflac U.S. President Virgil Miller, Clemson University Head Football Coach Dabo Swinney and the Clemson Tiger surprised children with their very own My Special Aflac Duck®, a high-tech, cuddly duck created to help children express their feelings, prepare for medical procedures and cope with their diagnosis and treatment. Aflac provides the ducks free of charge to healthcare providers, support organizations, and families of children 3 years or older who have been diagnosed with cancer or sickle cell disease.The duck delivery also marked the beginning of the Aflac Kickoff Game Mascot Challenge, where The Tiger will participate in football-inspired activities to bring awareness to childhood cancer and raise funds for Prisma Health Children’s Hospital-Upstate ahead of the Clemson-Georgia football game August 31.
