Pete was born in Charleston, West Virginia on May 19, 1946, to Barney and Hazel Sobataka. Pete spent his formative years in Jackson, Ohio where he excelled academically and in sports. He was most proud of being a member of the record-setting basketball team. Pete enjoyed his senior year in Marietta, graduating from Marietta High School in 1964. He went on to attend Ohio University where he became a proud Bobcat, joined Phi Delta Theta fraternity, and graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He was born December 11, 1950 in Hamden, Ohio, son of the late George G. Gardner and Ruth Elizabeth Oberholzer Gardner.
