i Union-News, Friday, January 15, 1999 C5 'First Sight' Flood of tears turns into trickle of titters titters even the nature of handicaps), the film settles for manufactured melodrama. Instead of real characters, it provides bravely suffering martyrs. It's like an old Joan Crawford movie only in this case, both stars want to be Crawford. "So this is what beautiful looks like," Kilmer says at his first sight of Sorvino's winsome, Daisy Duck pout. No, fella.

This i is what schmaltz looks like. And you're drowning in it. Kilmer and Sorvino wrestle back "At First Sight" after a couple of scenes, and their teary story goes on. And on. But unfortunately director Winkler's point-andshoot style remains stubbornly unsuited to a film about the amazing power of imagery.

And although Kelly McGillis is very good as Kilmer's bitter, self-sacrificing sister, the other stars aren't much help at all. 1. Oh, Sorvino has a goofy scene at the end of the picture where she shows Kilmer what different facial expressions mean (Best one: jubilation). But she spends the rest of the movie wearing a single look: her basic good-kid, shy-smile face. And while Kilmer is a wickedly apt choice to play a blind man (he's never seemed to notice any of his co-stars on-screen, let alone make eye contact), there's not much he.can do with a character whose two moods are cheerful and petulant.

There's potential here, but it's never explored. Instead of really examining the nature of seeing (or 'Dreams': Serial killer on loose Continued from Page C3 old serial-killer plot, a "Halloween" sequel dressed up with some Psychic Friends gimmickry. Jordan has always been a filmmaker with literary instincts, but one who is smart enough to surround himself with visual collaborators. That strategy helps him a little here. Director of photography Darius Khondji gives Cooper's dreams a grainy, washed horror; production designer Nigel Phelps makes those horrors real with elegantly decaying buildings, strangely sinister apple orchards and, best of all, an entirely modern Atlantis.

Unfortunately Jordan's direction (and the screenplay he cowrote with Bruce Robinson) can't turn any of those images into metaphors. The underwater city, By STEPHEN WHITTY MOVIE REVIEW Newhouse News Service In Dr. Oliver Sacks' article "To See and Not See," the hero was an overweight 50ish man who gave rubdowns at an Oklahoma Y. In Irwin Winkler's movie adaptation, "At First Sight," the hero is Val Kilmer, who works as a masseur at a posh New York spa. Such is Hollywood.

The one thing left unchanged by scriptwriter Steve Levitt, though, is the story's real-life Smart move because Hollywood hasn't had one like it since "Charly." Just like that weepy drama, "At First Sight" is the story of a man suddenly struggling with a new gift in this case, the eyesight he hasn't had since childhood. And just like that old movie, "At First Sight" looks for some unusual drama in the situation of a man suddenly blessed (and cursed) with new vision. But "At First Sight" is wearing dark glasses of its own deep, murky, rose-tinted Hollywood spectacles. And all it does is keep bumping into the furniture. There are so many unintended giggles, it may be difficult for badmovie novices to 1 pick out the biggest.

Is it when Mira Sorvino has her first massage at Kilmer's expert hands and races from sighs to groans to grateful tears faster than a Ferrari speedometer? Or is it when Kilmer, taken to a large co*cktail party, has a mini breakdown after they start spinning a mirrored ball and playing the Village People? 'At First Sight' Rated PG-13: Discreet sex, brief nudity and a few rude words Running time: 128 minutes Now playing: Hoyts Enfield, Greenfield Cinemas and Showcase Cinemas in East Windsor and West Springfield The true low point, however, comes shortly after Kilmer's sightgiving operation. The surgery has been a success, but the patient's having a breakdown; Kilmer can see, all right, but the images are so confusing that he'd rather be blind. Obviously, he needs help. "There's a fellow named Phil Webster," Kilmer's surgeon says, hesitantly recommending a specialist. "He's a little unorthodox Oh no! Unorthodox medico! Life-affirming pep talks! It's the dreaded 1 Robin Williams part! "At First Sight," however, doesn't have a Robin Williams budget.

So in handsprings Williams' "Birdcage" co-star, Nathan Lane were expecting Anne as a "vision therapist" whose treatment seems to consist of taking Kilmer to strip clubs and delivering ba-dah-boom punch lines in limbo. like New And suddenly what had been a weepie romance about a cute blind guy turns into "Eyepatch in the end, doesn't stand for anything; the link between the heroine's dreams and the killer's fantasies isn't just artsy but arbitrary. If Jordan gives the film any personal stamp at all, it's one of bitter pessimism; the movie is absolutely single-minded about taking every. dark turn and eschewing every possible happy ending it can find. The gruesomeness is depressingly over the top (this is the sort of movie in which nice characters aren't just killed, they're devoured by the starving family dog).

It's also wildly out of place in what's nothing more than a slick, standard thriller. Also out of place is the wildeyed guest star who plays the serial killer. Since the movie doesn't show his face until the final scenes, I assume they think his identity is some sort of surprise that shouldn't be spoiled. "In Dreams" has too few surprises for me to take that one away. But let me say that the actor who plays along in this guessing game is pretty bad (and, rather depressingly, plays the killer as that old hom*ophobic bogeyman, the "nancy boy And let me also note that Stephen Rea is more brave than successful in playing an East Coast Jewish shrink, and that Aidan Quinn's agent.

must find all his roles the "Thankless Hunk" pile. But Bening is tremendous, just as she was in "The Siege" and "Richard III" before that. Give her a few more roles and she might just be one of America's best actresses. Kristin Sroka played the wicked stepmother and got to say "mirror mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all." "It was so exciting," said her mother Donna A. Sroka after the movie ended.

Donna's husband Gary R. Sroka was also at the screening and he had a part as an extra, playing a policeman searching for Bening's daughter. He thinks he saw his flashlight in the film. The Sroka's also had nieces and nephews involved with the film. She's not sure if the photo will be used, but she plans to be there today just the same.

I wish the same could be said for the film's handsome but sometimes indistinguishable young newcomers. It's not just the swiftly paced and varied drama, the provocative ideas and the stinging hand-tohand combats that pay off. Malick's camera is never more eloquent than when it takes drifting note of some marvelous insect or voluptuous spill of light. A thesis could be written on his water imagery.
