Did you know we can incorporate chakras into the foods we eat? If you’ve been following along in my program, you’ll notice that I discuss the interrelationship between foods and practices that balance our individual chakras, for your overall health and ideal weight.

It’s no different when it comes to the choices I make when creating new recipes for my ‘Smoothie Sundays’. Today’s smoothie is my Starfruit Beauty Blend Recipe. One of the key ingredients you’ll benefit from is the starfruit—packed with vitamins, minerals, and balancing energy.

Plus, you’ll receive protein and fiber from the spinach and a little zesty-citrus-y kick of flavor from the lime. So what’s all this talk about chakras? Let’s find out…

What Does Starfruit Have To Do With The Third Chakra: Manipura?

Starfruit is a star-shaped tropical fruit with a sweet and sour flavor (also known as carambola). Carambola is cultivated in many parts of the Pacific islands, Southeast Asia, and China. However, it’s native to the Malayan peninsula.

Starfruit grows on a small, bushy evergreen tree that grows very well under hot, humid, tropical conditions. What’s so fun about how this plant grows, is that it starts off with small lilac colored, bell-shaped flowers (in clusters). Then, they develop into oblong shaped fruits with five-angled edges. Hence, the appearance like that of a starfish.

Starfruit is typically light-green to yellow with attractive smooth waxy surface. Their insides are crisp and juicy. The pulp will range from a mildly sweet to an extremely sour taste. This is depending upon the cultivar type and amount of oxalic acid concentration.

Beauty Benefits of Starfruit

Starfruit is one of very low calorie exotic fruits, but loaded with essential nutrients, antioxidants, and vitamins. The fruit and its waxy peel provide a good amount of dietary fiber — protecting the mucous membrane of the colon from exposure to toxic substances.

This amazing fruit also contains good quantities of vitamin-C, which is a powerful natural antioxidant (resisting infectious agents). They are also a good source of B-complex vitamins, minerals and electrolytes — helping to control heart rate and blood pressure.

The entire fruit is edible, including the slightly waxy skin, and you know what that means?! Try to make this a part of your Dirty Dozen list where you splurge a little on organic verses non-organic.

To prepare, wash them thoroughly in cold water and apple cider vinegar, rinse well with clean water, then dry them (using absorbent cloth). Trim off the ends and dry edges of the ribbed angles and cut cross-way into thin sections (this will give you that starfish resemblance).

Don’t forget to pick out any seeds near the center of each cut. They are now ready to be eaten as is, or thrown into the blender for this tasty recipe!

What about the third chakra?

Manipura (the third chakra), is the balanced energy that gives us the “fire”, confidence and inspiration to accomplish what you seek to do. What plays out here, is the relationship between your sense of self and the external, material world.

This third chakra, Manipura, comes from the element of fire (it’s color being, yellow), and is responsible for the transformative processes involved in digestion—efficient digestion is a big topic in the Beauty Detox lifestyle.

Something else to note, is that energies that are related to your career, business affairs and personal ambitions are processed through this chakra. Physically, this chakra is centered in your gut (or solar plexus), which is the area above your navel.

With good reason, we must take great care in avoiding stagnation and get things moving in our guts.

All great reasons to add foods rich in “digestive” fire and that aid in balancing the energy vibration — including the star-studded yellow starfruit!
